Canadian River Private Landowner Meeting
Southwest Region, May 20, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On May 20, 2005, John Hughes of the West Texas Suboffice met with six private landowners and officials from the Texas Cattle Feeders Association and Canadian River Municipal Water Authority (CRMWA) to discuss the provisions of the CRMWA-sponsored management plan for the Canadian River. The proposed management plan provides for exotic invasive species control from the New Mexico border to Lake Meredith on the Canadian River in order to improve water availability for the conservation of the threatened Arkansas River shiner. All of the landowners in attendance expressed interest in participating in the plan. Several landowners voiced their concern over trespass off-road vehicle (ORV) use on their properties, and asked if the Service could pursue the prosecution of ORV users under the Endangered Species Act. Mr. Hughes indicated that talks with ORV user groups were forthcoming, and that voluntary solutions to the problem had the best chance for success.
