Regional Refuge Biological Program Creates GIS Tool
Northeast Region, May 23, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The R5 Regional Refuge Biological Program created a new, GIS-based tool to assist national wildlife refuges in selecting between grassland cover, deciduous forest, or shrub-scrub habitat management options. All of these habitats are listed as ?Priority Habitats? in many (PIF) Bird Conservation Plans in Region 5. Each likely represents a valid, but mutually exclusive, habitat option for Refuges. The tool integrates various data layers available in the public domain, such as soil surveys, GAP program maps, and aerial photography, and scores habitat units on ?Restoration Achievability? and ?Landscape Context/Suitability? to help Refuges determine which restoration option will provide the most benefit to PIF species of regional responsibility or concern. The tool is currently being applied at Erie NWR and Eastern Virginia NWR, and has the potential to be applied across Region 5. Contact: Joseph J. Dowhan,Chief, Division of Natural Resources
