Regional Refuge Biological Program Pilots Winter Bird Surveys
Northeast Region, May 23, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The R5 Regional Refuge Biological Program conducted pilot wintering grassland bird surveys at Rappahannock River Valley NWR in preparation for a future multi-refuge/multi-region research project, (USGS RCRP). More than 30 refuges across Regions 3 and 5 have expressed an interest in identifying National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs) that are important to landbirds during the non-breeding season, which refuge habitats are important to different species, and how management actions may affect the use of refuge habitat by landbirds during the non-breeding season. This winter, the R5 RBP worked with USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, staff from the Eastern Virginia Rivers NWR and Dr. Duane Diefenbach of the USGS Wildlife Cooperative Research Unit at Penn State University to devise a survey protocol for the future study, that utilizes reliable, repeatable survey methods appropriate for winter surveys.
