First Settlement for Part of the Natural Resource Damages on Kalamazoo River
Midwest Region, May 18, 2005
Print Friendly Version
State and federal agencies, acting as trustees for the natural resources of the Kalamazoo River and working with the Department of Justice, reached a settlement for damages to fish, wildlife, and habitat related to releases of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) into the river from one of the paper mills along the Kalamazoo River. The Plainwell Inc., paper mill and associated landfill released PCBs associated with the mill's process of de-inking carbonless copy paper that contained high concentrations of PCBs. The Federal District Court approved the settlement agreement on May 18, 2005. Within 30 days, the trustees will receive $900,000 to be used for restoration, additional assessment work on the river, and repayment of a portion of past assessment costs.
