Fender's Blue Butterfly/Migratory Bird Day at Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge
Pacific Region, May 14, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On Saturday May 14, the Oregon State University Extension Service, Spirit Mountain Community Fund and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service joined together to co-sponsor a Fender's Blue Butterfly/Migratory Bird Day at Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge.

The Day's events began with early morning guided bird walks through oak savanna/woodland and wetland habitats. The migratory bird portion of the program also included a demonstration of the mist-netting technique for capturing and banding birds. This demonstration was provided by a wildlife biologist from U.S. Geological Survey.

At 10:00 AM, the focus of the event shifted from migratory birds to the endangered Fender's blue butterfly. Hidden within the oak savanna habitat on Baskett Butte is one of the last and the largest remnant population of this butterfly. From 10:00 AM through 1:00 PM, staff and volunteers, posted at key points along trails traversing through the butterfly habitat, provided information to visitors about the butterfly, wild flowers and management of the upland savanna habitat which is essential for the survival of this butterfly species. Other staff and volunteers staffed an environmental education station at the trail head parking area where visitors could pick up posters, brochures and informational pamphlets or participate in face-painting, butterfly/bird mobile construction and other hands-on educational activities.

The Fender's Blue Butterfly/Migratory Bird Day Event provided environmental education and wildlife viewing opportunities to about 225 visitors. Visitors were excited about the opportunity to see and learn about the endangered butterfly and migratory birds and interact with the volunteers and staff helping with the event. The Refuge is located about 10 miles west of Salem, Oregon.
