Journal Entry   Back Wallkill River NWR Rediscovers 4th Bog Turtle! Northeast Region, May 10, 2005 Print Friendly Version Kevin Holcomb, lead biologist at Wallkill River NWR, and biotechs Evan Castner and Scott Clemons, rediscovered a bog turtle not seen on the refuge in five years. Bog trutles are listed as threatened on the federal endanagered species list. Finding the turtle was a combination of hard work, a unique and effective cattle grazing program and sharp eyesight. The turtle has been fixed with a transmitter and released back into its habitat. Although finding the turtle has been a highlight of the season, the refuge is also proud of its ongoing work in improving turtle habitat via fenceing and grazing, and continues to seach additional sites for turtles. Habitat improvements are likely to continue in the discovery of more turltes on the refuge.
