Pepsi clean up
Northeast Region, March 4, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On March 4, 2005 at 3:40 AM, a tractor trailer owned and operated by Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. crashed through the guardrail on the northbound lane of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, landing in the bay. This fatal accident occurred just south (about ½ mile) of Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge, located approximately 13 miles south of Cape Charles, Va. The trailer was carrying 10,752 - 20oz bottles and 4,400 - two-liter bottles of soda. That evening three employees of the Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR surveyed Fisherman Island and decided to gather a work crew the next morning to remove any bottles that had floated onto the beach. A work crew of four FWS employees and seven FWS volunteers removed about 5,000 bottles from the island the morning of the 5th. Two days later over two hundred more bottles were found on Fisherman's Island and picked up by refuge staff. The remaining cleanup was performed by CBI Mid-Atlantic, contracted by Liberty Mutual Insurance, on behalf of Pepsi-Cola. Bottles and crates were also found on the bayside and the seaside of the southern tip of the Delmarva Peninsula and picked up by CBI. The cause of the accident is unknown and the investigation and clean up is ongoing.
