Silvio O. Conte Refuge Helps Landowners Plan Invasive Plant Control
Northeast Region, April 30, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The staff of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge recently completed five workshops for landowners, entitled ?Where Do I Begin: Planning Invasive Plant Control on Large Parcels.? The 99 participants collectively managed a total of 691,592 acres in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. In addition to landowners, conservation commissions, land trusts, nature centers, water suppliers, and schools and colleges, many attendees were from federal and state agencies. Many agency representatives sought information to pass along to landowners with whom they work, so the workshops should have a large ripple effect.

About 60 people are on a waiting list for fall presentations of the workshop.

The workshops were held at the Service's Northeast Regional Office and the Great Falls Discovery Center in Turners Falls, Mass., and the Montshire Museum in Norwich, Vt. They focused on teaching a prioritization process that attendees can apply to their own land.
