Herrick's Cove Wildlife Festival
Northeast Region, May 9, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The Connecticut River Coordinator's Office staffed an interactive fisheries exhibit at the Herrick's Cove Wildlife Festival north of Bellows Falls, VT on Mother's Day. The event, sponsored by the Ascutney Mountain Chapter of Audubon and TransCanada drew 800 people to see the live demonstrations on snakes, eagles and wolves. The fisheries exhibit focused on migratory fish of the Connecticut River. Youngsters actively fished for magnetic eels, shad and trout using rods baited with metal washers! The young anglers identified their catch using a large three dimensional chart of the river's fish. The more serious minded students dissected a salmon using a wooden display model. Adults tried their hand at estimating the age of fish by counting bands of rings seen on a fish scale. And, a lot of people voted on the question of whether or not transgenic salmon production and sales should be approved by the FDA. Some folks took home information on water chestnut and others promised to help stock salmon fry this spring.
