Virginia Field Office restores habitat at Fort Eustis, Va.
Northeast Region, May 25, 2005
Print Friendly Version
An ecological risk assessment by biologists at the Virginia Field Office led to the removal of about 2,000 tons of soil and all of the trees from a former skeet and trap shooting range at Fort Eustis Army Base in Newport News, Va. Lead and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons had contaminated the soil and the saltmarsh around the range.

Biologists planted more than 100 trees and converted an old borrow pit with standing water into a wetland for amphibians. Many species of amphibians are already breeding there, and ducks have also begun to use it. More removal and restoration is planned for the saltmarsh and nearby upland.
