Partners program at Virginia Field Office lands $1 million habitat protection grant
Northeast Region, April 15, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Staff at the Northeast Region's Virginia Ecological Services Field Office have worked for over one year with The Nature Conservancy's Virginia Coastal Reserve to develop habitat project plans, budgets, and partnership commitments for a North American Wetlands Conservation Act funding proposal. Funding for the Southern Tip Ecological Partnership proposal was approved in April 2005 for almost $1 million dollars and will result in restoration and protection of coastal habitats for neotropical birds migrating along the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Cooperating with the field office's Partners for Fish and Wildlife program staff were nine conservation-minded families in Northampton County, along with the newly established Virginia Eastern Shore Land Trust, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge. Service and conservancy staff will work together over the next two years to restore or enhance 597 acres and protect 1,957 acres of migratory bird habitat that lie between the refuge, Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge.
