Blackwater Cleans Up Refuge to Celebrate Earth Day
Northeast Region, April 9, 2005
Print Friendly Version
In support of the annual Earth Day celebration, Blackwater NWR volunteers conducted another successful clean up of the public roads adjacent to the refuge over 2 weekends in April. On Sunday, April 3, a group of 35 students representing the University of Maryland College Park Scholars, led by Professor Lee Helman, picked up trash from a 1.5-mile stretch of Shorter's Wharf Road, which passes through some of the refuge's most scenic marshlands. The students worked through overcast and drizzly conditions, and collected about 15 bags of garbage, which were separated for recycling. They ate lunch in the refuge's maintenance garage, at which time Blackwater's FCO (and Dorchester County native) Bill Giese gave the students a talk and demo about the trapping heritage of Blackwater's marshes, and the impacts that the non-native nutria have had on the marshes. Saturday, April 9, was Blackwater NWR's annual Earth Day Litter Pick-up, for which the public is invited to join the refuge's volunteers in cleaning up the roadsides. Twenty-three volunteers collected cans, bottles, paper, and other waste from about 5 miles of the most visible roadways adjacent to refuge property. Garbage was picked up from the entire length of Key Wallace Drive, as well as portions of Egypt Road, Shorter's Wharf Road, and the Rt. 335 canoe/kayak launch area. Eight of the refuge's ?regular? volunteers participated in the event, and were joined by Boy Scouts from Troop 167, students from Easton High School, Easton Middle School, and Saints Peter and Paul School, and three members of Americorps. Over 40 bags of garbage were removed from the roadways during this successful event. The refuge was supported in this endeavor, as always, by the Friends of Blackwater, who provided drinks, snacks, and some equipment for the hard workers.
