Virginia Field Office Project Benefits Red-cockaded Woodpecker
Northeast Region, April 25, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The Virginia Ecological Services Field Office has finished implementing a habitat conservation plan for the red-cockaded woodpecker under the Endangered Species Act. This plan is the first one to be completed by the field office, though others are underway. The April effort involved relocating a solitary bird and pairs of birds from approved donor populations. The project was conducted through a timber harvest of 75 acres straddling Sussex and Southampton Counties, Virginia.

The relocation of the solitary male woodpecker provides the best opportunity for this bird to breed. The plan includes habitat improvements at The Nature Conservancy's Piney Grove Preserve in Sussex County, which supports the host population. This population is the only remaining population in Virginia, the northern extent of the red-cockaded woodpecker's range.

In addition to the relocation of the adult male, a 20-year conservation easement was placed on a stretch of woods along the Nottoway River to provide migratory bird and other wildlife habitat protection.
