Pittsford Hatchery Produces 77,500 Salmon for New York Analysis
Northeast Region, April 25, 2005
Print Friendly Version
During the week of April 22, staff at the Pittsford National Fish Hatchery took a break from hauling landlocked salmon smolts to the Vermont side of the lake, and loaded 77,500 of them onto trucks sent by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Fifteen trucks carried 14,000 pounds of smolts averaging 8.2 inches to stock the Boquet and Saranac rivers on the New York side of Lake Champlain. Part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Resources Complex, the hatchery produces 160,000 salmon smolts for Lake Champlain each year. The hatchery had reared three separate strains of salmon for an ongoing evaluation in New York's Boquet River to determine the strain most suitable for Lake Champlain. The releases of smolts on the Vermont side of the lake through mid-May have resumed.
