Endangered Species Conservation Initiatives Discussed in Texas
Southwest Region, April 28, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On April 27-28, 2005, staff from the Arlington Field Office met with representatives from the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and other agencies in a series of meetings regarding opportunities to conserve listed species in Texas. The initial meeting involved FSA representatives from Texas and Washington, D.C. to explore incentives for Conservation Reserve Program applicants through the Safe Harbor/Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances programs. A subsequent meeting included Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) staff and focused on the application of the Conservation Reserve Program for the conservation of the lesser prairie-chicken. TPWD is currently developing a Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances for the lesser prairie-chicken in west Texas. The final meeting was held by TPWD to specifically address the status of the lesser prairie-chicken and organize efforts to preclude the need for its protection under the Endangered Species Act. Regional Director Dale Hall and Texas State Administrator Renne Lohoefener attended the meeting, which included representatives from FSA, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Texas Department of Agriculture, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, and Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.
