College spring break groups work to improve refuge

The St. Marks NWR participated as a host site again this year for the National Alternative Spring Break Program. Students from Grand Valley State University in Michigan and Indiana University School of Business drove down to Florida to spend their spring break, to work on Service projects. GVSU students, with direction from refuge maintenance staff, Dallas Beckett and Chris Weber, constructed a new nest platform to be used by breeding pairs of least terns. These platforms, located in refuge impoundments, are wood frame structures with a gravel and sand floor. Students from both schools and refuge maintenance staff also removed six miles of barbed wire fence along the old Aucilla Tram Road, picked up garbage along the freshly burned dikes, and trimmed the Mounds hiking trail. This program helps the refuge reduce the refuge maintenance backlog and educates students about the mission of the agency.
