First Flight Middle School and local refuges partner for conservation project
Southeast Region, March 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
A couple of months ago, Gail Dreiss, an English teacher for First Flight Middle School, came to her first meeting of the Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society's ?Friends of the Refuge? work teams. She believes in teaching young people the value of natural resources and of giving something back to the community. So, she immediately rose to the challenge and organized some of her students to join in on a work day. In reporting their day's activities, Dreiss said she and 13 National Junior Honor Society students from the First Flight Middle School arrived at the refuge work-camper site on Saturday morning, before 10. The students, she said worked like Trojans all day long. Her report went on to say, ?I have never worked with such willing hands and bodies. They followed directions, asked intelligent questions about the flora and fauna, and alternately chilled and thawed all day long. We planted 410 wax myrtles and laid 20 pallets of centipede grass sod. We shoveled, hoed and raked along the work site, lifting, pushing and tossing, and a good time was had by all." She signed her report Gail Dreiss, Assistant Crew Chief. "Bob Glennon, coastal wildlife botanist and landscaper, served as crew chief, she said, and introduced us to the site.
