White River NWR Public Use Specialist visits Tanzania to help train local park rangers

Ray Paterra, Public Use Specialist at White River NWR in Arkansas recently returned from a two week International Technical Assistance Program (ITAP) detail in Tanzania. The purpose of the trip was to provide visitor services and interpretive guide training to eight park rangers from several different Tanzanian parks. The training took place at Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks, which provided Ray with wonderful opportunities to both instruct rangers and see wildlife. When not honing his instructor abilities, he worked on his photography skills. From 8am to 4pm Ray found himself in the classroom, teaching various techniques of interpretation and brochure development. The evenings were dedicated to viewing wildlife. ?While this opportunity allowed me to provide training to guides in the National Parks, I received so much more in return through the opportunities to view African wildlife and experience a different culture. It makes me feel alive.? said Ray. This is Ray's second visit to East Africa. While in the Peace Corp, he spent two years in Uganda.
