KENAI: Friends Clean-up Along Popular Hiking Trail
Alaska Region, May 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Friends of Kenai National Wildlife Refuge completed a clean-up along Skyline Trail on Saturday May 1, 2005. Approximately 10 pounds of litter was removed along the popular hiking route including food wrappers, bottles, and cans. The Friends group does annual highway and campground clean-ups throughout the spring and summer on the Refuge and now is adding some Refuge hiking trails to their litter patrol schedule. Skyline Trail will be visited one additional time during the summer to remove any additional garbage that may be left behind by hikers who have not yet learned to pack out everything they carry in on their backcountry trips. The litter patrols, informational signs and kiosks, and an increased educational emphasis on "leave no trace" outdoor activities are all part of the Refuge's efforts to reduce litter.
