Goulds Turkeys Translocated from the San Bernardino NWR by the Arizona Game and Fish Department.
Southwest Region, March 15, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On March 15, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, in cooperation with staff from the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge, captured eight live Goulds turkey's on the Refuge for translocation to the Grant Creek Natural Area on Mount Graham , south of Safford , Arizona . Four male gobblers and four female hens were captured with equipment and funding donated by the National Wildlife Turkey Federation. These turkeys were released with the goal of increasing the genetic diversity of the existing turkey population on Mount Graham . One of the gobblers and two of the hens were fitted with telemetry backpacks so that there status can be continually monitored. The Arizona Game and Fish Department has been translocating Goulds turkeys onto Mount Graham for the last three years. Previously the Goulds were trapped in Mexico and then flown up to the US and released, however, this year Mexico has denied the Department permits. Trapping the birds at the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge was extremely helpful towards Goulds turkey restoration in Arizona . The staff at the San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge look forward to continued cooperation with the Arizona Game and Fish Department with these efforts.
