Mexican Wolf Recovery Program Recent Field Activities
Southwest Region, April 2, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The Mexican Wolf Interagency Field Team (IFT) has been attempting to capture two packs of wolves to return them to the Sevilleta and Ladder Ranch Wolf Management Facilities for management reasons. In December, 2003, male 796 (M796) and female 903 (F903) were located outside the recovery area in the San Mateo Mountains, NM. Per the Mexican Wolf Experimental Population Final Rule, the wolves were trapped in August, 2004, and translocated into the Gila Wilderness in September, 2004. Unfortunately, the pair promptly returned to the San Mateo Mountains the following month. The IFT again recommended their removal from the San Mateo Mountains. M796 and F903 were captured on March 30, and April 2, 2005, respectively. The two were taken to the Sevilleta Wolf Management Facility on April 2, 2005. F903 whelped a litter of four pups on April 3, 2005. The IFT is considering relocating this pair with their pups to a more suitable location in Arizona, far from the San Mateo Mountains.

In July, 2004, the Aspen Pack was released in Arizona. The alpha pair, male 512 (M512) and female 667 (F667), established a territory near Blue, AZ. Due to nuisance behavior, the IFT recommended the removal of the pair. On April 9, 2005, M512 was trapped and taken to the Sevilleta Wolf Management Facility. Trapping efforts for F667 are ongoing.
