Project SHARE Receives National Award from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Leader
Northeast Region, April 14, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On March 10, at a recognition banquet held in Washington, D.C., U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Assistant Director for Fisheries and Habitat Mamie Parker honored the Maine-based Project SHARE (Salmon Habitat and River Enhancement) with the "Celebrating Partnerships - Celebrating Habitat" award. The new award, originated by Dr. Parker, recognizes "individuals and organizations that, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, have made extraordinary contributions to the conservation of aquatic habitat".

Accepting for Project SHARE at the Washington ceremonies was Steven Koenig, Executive Director of SHARE.

In presenting the award, Dr. Parker said, "Project SHARE has demonstrated how energy from a diverse group of organizations and interests can be harnessed to benefit conservation. Project SHARE is a model for building cooperative partnerships".

Project SHARE is comprised of Maine landowners, salmon anglers, businesses and corporations, private organizations and several state and federal agencies that all share the common interest of a healthy and functioning ecosystem. The cooperative efforts in habitat conservation and restoration brought about by SHARE have greatly benefited endangered Atlantic salmon in the Washington County region of Maine, where five of the eight protected Atlantic salmon populations are found. The species was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in December 2000.

Dr. Parker's award presentation was repeated locally by the Service with the SHARE membership in attendance in Whitneyville, Maine, on April 14.
