Predators a Constant Threat at Pittsford, Other Fish Hatcheries
Northeast Region, March 28, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Pittsford National Fish Hatchery, like most hatcheries, is an attractive food source for fish predators. Like a free smorgasbord, the ponds and raceways entice many mammals and birds to come to dine on the fish. Herons, ducks, and kingfisher are commonly found at hatchery ponds. Pittsford National Fish Hatchery has had kingfisher and great blue herons but with our green house enclosures and completely covered wood frame raceway, we have kept them from visiting the fish. The mammals continue to visit in the fall, winter, and spring, exploring screened windows for openings to break through.

We have river otter, mink, and raccoon. The bigger species have been foiled, but the small, slender mink continues to find the tiniest flaw in a screen or door frame to slide through and eat fish. We need to trap mink in order to keep our fish healthy. Biosecurity is jeopardized when the mink enters the raceway from outside water sources, where virus and bacterial pathogens exist. Stress resulting from mink attacks can lead to disease outbreaks. Disturbances also put the salmon off feeding, which can lower their resistance to pathogens and parasites and limit their growth.
