Mountainaire Healthy Forests Restoration Act Project
Southwest Region, March 24, 2005
Print Friendly Version
For the last year, the Flagstaff Suboffice of the Arizona Ecological Services Office has worked with the Forest Service and the Greater Flagstaff Forest Partnership on designing the fourth 10,000+-acre wildland urban interface fuels reduction project within the greater Flagstaff area. The Mountainaire Healthy Forests Restoration Act Project will be one of the first projects to be implemented under the Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA) and the Greater Flagstaff Community Wildfire Protection Plan. On March 24, 2005, the Forest Service issued the proposed action for the HFRA project. The project design is truly the result of a collaborative effort and will result not only in increased wildfire protection for the community of Mountainaire and the City of Flagstaff, but will also emphasize the maintenance of important wildlife habitat and important forest structure attributes, especially within Mexican spotted owl habitat. We assisted in designing the proposed thinning within the Mexican spotted owl protected activity center(PAC) and will assist during implementation and monitoring of project activities within the PAC. Proposed treatments within the PAC were designed to increase and improve owl habitat, while also reducing wildfire risk to the PAC.
