Private Stewardship Grant to Benefit Lesser Prairie-Chicken and Other Grassland Birds in Eastern NM
Southwest Region, March 7, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The New Mexico Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program (PFW) staff completed a Grant Agreement to restore approximately 16,000 acres of wildlife habitat on private lands in Roosevelt, Curry, Quay, and Chaves Counties. The Cooperator, the Grasslans Charitable Foundation, was awarded a grant through the Service's Private Stewardship Grant Program. The Grasslans Charitable Foundation will be working with the PFW and private landowners to restore and enhance native grasslands, playas, and riparian habitats. Habitat enhancements will include livestock fencing, invasive plant eradication, native species plantings, wildlife water developments and grazing practices that will benefit wildlife. These enhancements are designed to benefit the lesser prairie-chicken (a candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act), wintering waterfowl, migrating shorebirds, grassland birds, and the sand dune lizard (candidate species) in eastern New Mexico.
