Fish and Wildlife Service Provides a Briefing to the Rio Grande Compact Commission

On March 31, 2005, staff from the Regional Office and New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office attended the 66th annual meeting of the Rio Grande Compact Commission in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Selected Service activities reported in the annual report ?Report to the Rio Grande Compact Commission ? U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Activities in the Rio Grande Basin, Calendar Year 2004? were summarized in a brief presentation to the State Compact Commissioners from Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. The briefings included: status of the 2003 Programmatic Biological Opinion on Bureau of Reclamation and Corps of Engineers Water and Flood Operation; the status of the Rio Grande silvery minnow in the Rio Grande, including monitoring, recovery, augmentation, and rescue activities, the status of Rio Grande silvery minnow Recovery Team efforts; the status Rio Grande silvery minnow experimental non-essential populations; ongoing and planned research and field studies, the status of the southwestern willow flycatcher, the status of the flycatcher critical habitat re-designation, and flycatcher recovery activities in the Rio Grande basin; Elephant Butte Reservoir delta southwestern willow flycatcher issues; status of the Rio Grande cutthroat trout, and a summary of restoration projects funded by the Middle Rio Grande Bosque Initiative or the Middle Rio Grande Endangered Species Act Collaborative Program. The meeting was well attended and served to inform many agencies and groups about Service activities that affect fish and wildlife in the Rio Grande basin.
