Fish Surveys and Habitat Assessment in Rio Chama and Rio Grande Upstream of Cochiti Completed
Southwest Region, March 23, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On March 23, 2005, the New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office Federal Activities Branch and the New Mexico Fishery Resources Office completed a fish survey and habitat assessment for the Rio Chama and Rio Grande above Cochiti Lake. The study was conducted in coordination with the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. The purpose of the study was to determine the absence or presence of Rio Grande silvery minnow above Cochiti Lake and to evaluate the suitability of this area for a potential reintroduction site. No silvery minnow were collected in the seining and electrofishing surveys. The report recommended that the reach of the Rio Grande near Big Bend National Park in Texas, be considered a higher priority location for silvery minnow reintroduction at this time. Furthermore, we recommended that the experimental stocking of silvery minnow above Cochiti Lake not be considered until a surplus of silvery minnow becomes available.
