Journal Entry   Back NM Ecological Services provides Biological Opinion for Rio Peñasco Forest Mgmt Plan Southwest Region, March 9, 2005 Print Friendly Version On March 9, 2005, the New Mexico Ecological Services Field Office completed formal consultation on a re-initiation with the Lincoln National Forest on the proposal to implement the Rio Peñasco II Non-Programmatic Vegetation Management Project and Forest Plan Amendment, Sacramento Ranger District, Lincoln National Forest. The project proposes pre-commercial and commercial thinning, a Mexican spotted owl monitoring program, and prescribed burns, broadcast burns, jackpot pile burns, and pile burns with creep as management activities. The proposed project is expected to assist the Forest Service in restoring and protecting forest stands in the action area. Through consultation, the proposed action will lessen the threat of wildfire to the Mexican spotted owl and its designated critical habitat as well as provide additional monitoring data. As a result, we anticipate that intensive, destructive fires will likely occur less frequently on the Lincoln National Forest, and the proposed treatments will minimize the risk of wildfire damage to life, property, and natural resources, including the Mexican spotted owl and its critical habitat.
