Combined Computer Data Helps Recovery Efforts for Delmarva Fox Squirrel
Northeast Region, March 15, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Biologist Leslie Gerlich of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Chesapeake Bay Field Office in Annapolis, Md., has created a new data layer on the endangered Delmarva fox squirrel. Gerlich, a Geographic Information System Analyst from the Coastal Program, combined two polygon GIS data layers, one from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and one from the field office, to create a new, more refined occupied habitat layer. It more accurately depicts the forested habitat where the squirrel is known to live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, in Sussex County, Delaware, and on Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

As with other data, this layer will be updated with new sightings and shared with other agencies aiding the recovery of the species: the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, the Maryland DNR, The Nature Conservancy, and the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy.
