AK PENINSULA: Refuge Revitalizes Local Recycling Effort
Alaska Region, March 23, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Alaska Peninsula/Becharof Refuges are partnering with Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR) to bring recycling back to the communities of King Salmon and Naknek. Currently, there is no recycling program in these communities. The program will kick-off on Earth Day (April 22nd) with a competition to see who can bring in the most aluminum cans. After that, community members will drop off their cans at collection sites throughout the two communities. Cans are bagged in special "green" bags and flown to Anchorage via Northern Air Cargo, which participates in this "flying cans" program through an agreement with ALPAR. Monies generated from recycled cans will be returned to the Bristol Bay School library to buy books and materials on conservation and the environment.
