Journal Entry   Back AK PENINSULA: Refuge and State Partner for Caribou Calf Survival Study Alaska Region, March 23, 2005 Print Friendly Version Alaska Peninsula/Becharof National Wildlife Refuges are partnering with Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G) to conduct an intensive study of calf survival among the Northern Alaska Peninsula Caribou Herd (NAPCH). The herd is a critical food supply for subsistence hunters, but fewer animals have resulted in harvest restrictions since 1999. The herd continues to decline and few calves have been born in the last two years. Calf composition last fall was at an all time low at seven calves per 100 cows. The study will start by collaring and checking weights of newborn calves this spring while an ADF&G veterinarian will sample calves for disease, parasites, and overall health. Scientists will closely follow the animals for six weeks to determine causes of mortality, an important step in determining recovery scenarios for the herd.
