Completion of Formal Consultation on the Coronado NF's Programmatic Fire Plan for the Peloncillo Mtn
Southwest Region, March 18, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Staff from the Arizona ES office and Coronado NF have been working on this programmatic fire plan for the last four years. In that time, we have allowed for several individual prescribed burns (Baker prescribed burns 1 and 2) in occupied and suitable habitat for the New Mexico ridge-nosed rattlesnake. Through the cooperative efforts of the Forest, Rocky Mountain research station, and snake experts from ASU and NM Game and Fish, and with help from the Malpai Borderlands Group, we are able to move forward with re-introducing fire on a landscape level to this region. Working togther, we were able to delineate and map suitable snake habitat, delineate, quantify and analyze the effects of fire on snake habitat, and jointly determined the amount of snake habitat that could be affected by the activities associated with this 10- year plan. The cooperative effort resulted in a product that conserves the species and its habitat while allowing for a natural ecosystem process to be restored in the area.
