INNOKO - Moose Census Kicks-Off Interagency Planning Effort

Innoko Refuge teamed with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Tanana Chiefs Conference, and the villages of Holy Cross, Anvik, Grayling, and Shageluk on January 18-20 to begin a Moose Management Plan for the lower Yukon Valley and the Innoko River basin. This first meeting reviewed existing information on moose, wolf, and bear populations in the area, as well as hearing from local hunters. The last moose census conducted by ADF&G for the lower Yukon River valley was spring 2000; the Refuge conducted a partial census in spring 2004, but weather forced a premature end. Citing the need for new population data, local residents strongly encouraged the agencies to attempt a census this spring.

BLM and ADF&G funded the census while Innoko Refuge provided critical logistic support by opening its field station, as well as participating in the census. Between 25 February and 3 March, the joint effort surveyed 150 of the 812 survey units. Census results estimated the moose population at 4,673 (90% confidence interval = 3,897-5,449) with 16% of the moose observed being calves. The 2000 estimate was 5,151 (90% confidence interval = 4,483-5,819). The interagency group will meet April 18-20 in Shageluk to review census results and determine management goals for the region, with Innoko Refuge an active partner in this effort.
