Wage Grade work force receives support at February workshop
Southeast Region, February 8, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The February 8-10, 2005, Wage Grade/Maintenance Workshop in Memphis, Tennessee marked yet another milestone in the recognition and advancement of the wage grade workforce in the Southeast Region. A major focus of the first workshop, held in 2002, was personnel issues that had been long overlooked and needed immediate attention. Now that most of these issues have either been resolved, or are in the final stages of resolution, we in the wage grade community have shifted our focus to ways we can create efficiency and improve our individual programs. From the 2005 workshop, we are now focusing on ways to receive training that allows us to perform our jobs better, developing Memorandums Of Understanding within local communities so we can easily assist in the event of natural disasters, doing force account work on deferred maintenance projects, and assisting with cross-program training opportunities. All of these new issues highlight our dedication to our stations and our communities, as well as our willingness to ?do more with less.?

The 2005 workshop brought home to us the level of support we have internally and externally. Regional Director Hamilton told us to take pride in what we do, because he does. He listened to our concerns and has followed through with actions, including funding a workshop during a time of very lean budgets. The Regional Directorate and our many partners recognize our contributions and the importance of what we do for the resource. Workshop guest speaker Tom Bennett, Commissioner of Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, made it clear that we are truly the ?backbone of the Fish and Wildlife Service.?

We in the wage grade community recognize ourselves as part of a larger organization of people that are pulling together for the conservation of our fish and wildlife resources. Along with other Service employees, we are ambassadors for our refuges and hatcheries. We know that our communities use us as sounding boards for local issues, and we plan to stay tuned in and to communicate with management on what we see and hear. We have come a long way in the past three years. We will go a lot further in the next three.
