Journal Entry   Back National Abnormal Frog Survey Meeting Southwest Region, March 10, 2005 Print Friendly Version The National Abnormal Frog Survey on FWS Refuges is entering its 5th year, and the Clear Lake EC staff hosted the annual meeting in Junction, TX between March 7-10. This years meeting focused on the 5-year report that is due to the National Coordinator, so that the report to congress can be prepared and sent to congressional staff. The decision was to produce a 25 page report with lots of pictures, for the congressional staff, plus a much larger report with all the data in an appendix section to be available to the research community. In order to complete this the national database that has been assembled is on a fast tract to be available to the regional coordinators. The database was recently transferred into ECOS and there are some glitches yet to be worked out. The Clear Lake staff has completed the abnormal frog survey on 6 refuges in Region 2, they are in the second year on 8 refuges, and are planning 3 additional refuges for this year. Abnormalities are running less than 2 percent in Region 2 which is well below the numbers seen in the other regions. The protocol calls for the examination of 100 recently metamorphosed frogs on each refuge and each refuge is to be surveyed for two breeding seasons. If abnormal frogs are detected above 3 percent then the refuge is surveyed again a third year.
