Nestucca Bay NWR Co-sponsors Pacific City Birding and Blues Festival
Pacific Region, February 27, 2005
Print Friendly Version
The 2nd Annual Pacific City Birding and Blues Festival of February 26-27 was a resounding success, thanks in part to Refuge Operations Specialist Dawn Grafe and AmeriCorps member Leilani Nussman of the Oregon Coast NWR Complex. There was a 91% increase in attendance from the first event held in 2004. People of all ages came to the festival eager to learn more about the fascinating world of birds and to improve their birdwatching skills.

The festival offered a variety of activities that made it interesting for everyone. Guided bird walks were the most popular and hit the most popular birding spots in the area including Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Whalen Island State Park and Bob Straub State Park. Due to overwhelming demand, three Nestucca Bay NWR walks were offered on Saturday with 50 participants each joining the first two tours and three people with disabilities on the third private tour. The walks were guided by ROS Dawn Grafe; refuge volunteers Leilani Nussman, Matt Love, Doug Grafe and local birders Paul Sullivan, Ram Papish and Carol Karlen. Early Sunday morning Dawn and another local birder Pete Owston led a hike through Bob Straub State Park for 25 early risers. They were treated to a variety of seabirds including pigeon guillemot, rhinoceros auklet, common murre, yellow-billed loon, and western grebe. Birdwatchers tallied all of the species seen during the festival weekend and by the end of the event logged a total of 69 species.

While some participants birded, others attended a suite of bird related workshops covering topics such as shorebird migratory patterns, the science behind using pelagic bird counts to predict salmon runs, the techniques of field sketching, the importance of buying shade grown coffee to protect migratory songbirds, and the basics of getting started in the world of birdwatching. The latter workshop, with over 30 participants, was the kickoff workshop for the festival and was given by Dawn. Bill Wadsworth, a festivalgoer and friend of Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge led one of the bird walks and spent considerable time drumming up support for a Friends of Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

During the evening, birders donned their boogie shoes and enjoyed a sold out concert featuring the Lloyd Jones Struggle. The restaurants and hotels in Pacific City benefited from a boost in business directly resulting from the festival. Funds generated from the festival will be used to design, fabricate and install four wildlife interpretive signs at Natural Areas in the Pacific City area in late 2005. A committee has already formed to work on the design of the panels. Dawn will represent the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
