Alternative Sea Lamprey Control Research Continues in the Lake Champlain Basin
Northeast Region, February 17, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On February 17th, The Nature Conservancy's Southern Lake Champlain Valley Office hosted a meeting to discuss ongoing research into non-lampricide control of sea lamprey. This informal meeting was held to keep participants informed of the progress made during the 2004 field season, while the official alternatives workgroup awaits a charter under the Federal Advisory Committee Act. Employees of the Lake Champlain Fish and Wildlife Resources Office involved with sea lamprey assessment, control, and research were in attendance. Investigators presented updates and discussed planned activities for six projects designed to look into various aspects of sea lamprey ecology and control.

Projects underway include the development of a life stage-based population viability model to determine the effect of various control measures on particular life stages, an investigation of the potential effectiveness of a barrier and trap on the Poultney River, cutting edge science of pheromone applications, and the use of microelemental analysis to determine natal origin of parasitic phase sea lamprey.
