U.S. Forest Service's Southern Research Station solicits input regarding future research direction

Federal, State, and Private partners assembled at the U.S. Forest Service's Southern Research Station in Nacogdoches, Texas, to provide input on short and long-term research needs within the service area of this research unit. Representatives from the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (East Texas Sub-office, Reality and Migratory Bird Office), Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Forest Service, Texas Committee on Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy, industrial private landowners, and other interested parties discussed ongoing research and future research opportunities in the West Gulf Coastal Plain, the Upper West Gulf Coastal Plain, and beyond. The current focus of U.S. Forest Service is fire, fragmentation and land conversion, off-highway vehicle use of Forest Service lands, and invasive species. The primary focus of this Southern Research Station is Forest Wildlife.

This unit currently conducts research on wildlife in streamside management zones, wildlife responses to prescribed fire and the scientists are leading authorities on Anurans, Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, Louisiana pine snakes, timber rattlesnakes, alligator snapping turtles, Bachman's sparrows, and other Federally-listed, State-listed, and species of concern inhabiting southern forests.
