Volunteers Help Restore Dunes on McFaddin NWR
Southwest Region, February 28, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Thirteen volunteers and 4 refuge staff built 1000 feet of sand fence and planted native dune grasses as part of an ongoing dune restoration project on McFaddin NWR. Remnant sand dunes along the Gulf of Mexico are a unique and important habitat on McFaddin NWR, supporting plants found nowhere else on the refuge, providing wildlife habitat, slowing shoreline erosion, and helping to maintain natural hydrological conditions in inland marshes. The fence and new plantings will help accumulate wind-blown sand and stabilize the restored dunes.
