Partners for Fish and Wildlife FY 2005 Projects

In February, the Arizona Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program reviewed nine project applications submitted for the second round of funding in FY 2005. Six projects were selected, totaling $71,403. The projects are as follows: 1) Work with the students and faculty at Douglas High School with their wetland pond that is a refuge for the Chiricahua leopard frog which is listed as a threatened species. 2) Enhance wetland habitat that is used by numerous migratory birds including sandhill cranes by repairing an earthen dam located on private land in southeastern Arizona. 3) Assist the Audubon Research Ranch in southern Arizona by installing/repairing a perimeter fence, plus purchase equipment to help restore native grassland habitat through selective application of herbicide to eradicate invasive weeds. 4) Work with a private landowner who leases State Land to construct an additional pond that will be used by Chiricahua leopard frogs in southeastern Arizona. 5) Treat an abandoned agricultural field for invasive weeds and seed with native grasses. This project is located in southeastern Arizona on land adjacent to the San Pedro River. 6) Continue work by the White Mountain Apache Tribe on a fish barrier that will keep non-native fish from entering upstream habitat that contains Apache Trout, which is listed as a threatened species.

Three projects were selected during the first round of review for Partners applications. For 2005, Partners will fund eight projects (two were combined into one project) totaling $99,236.
