The Sierra Club helps Buenos Aires NWR
Southwest Region, February 21, 2005
Print Friendly Version
In March, fourteen members of Sierra Club traveled from many parts of the U.S. to provide a week of donated work for the refuge. In four days, they removed barbed wire fence left over from ranching days in Brown Canyon and grassland sections of the refuge. This totaled nearly 14,000 linear feet of 4- to 6-strand barbed wire fence, 160 feet of hog wire and 235 fence posts. The crew repaired flood damage on the Brown Canyon Road at three creek fords, cut brush to reduce fire hazard around buildings, and improved 2500 feet of hiking trails. This is the ninth Sierra Club work group in five years at Buenos Aires NWR. The workers tackled projects that otherwise would go unfinished because of staff and budget limitations. Sierra Club members are grateful in return for the chance to contribute directly to habitat improvement and wildlife conservation.
