RIO GRANDE STATES WILDLIFE MEETING

A Rio Grande States Wildlife Meeting between Texas, New Mexico and Northeast Mexico was held at the Chapparral Wildlife Management Area, Artesia Wells, Texas. The state natural resources agencies of Northeast Mexico proposed a meeting to coordinate wildlife management and biodiversity projects in the Texas-Northeast Mexico region. The topics discussed were donating surplus wildlife to Mexico and white-tailed deer management workshops given by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), completing the Binational white-winged strategic plan between Texas and Tamaulipas,Mexico, participation of Mexico in the Central Flyway Council, workshops given to Mexico on ecosystem management to maximize biodiversity, wetland habitat conservation, fire management, and game warden academy training to officers in Mexico. There were discussions on Binational habitat conservation and restoration of wildlife corridors, extending the Great Texas Birding Trail from the Rio Grande Valley, Texas to the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, developing a list of shared species of special concern between Texas/Mexico border, participation of Mexico in selecting sites similar to the Texas World Birding Centers and writing an article on hunter education and hunting in Mexico.

The U.S. participants included TPWD directors, New Mexico Game & Fish Binational Project Coordinator, and the USFWS from Alamo Ecological Services Field Office Substation and Region 2 US/Mexico Coordinator. Mexico participants were from the states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, and Chihuahua, Mexico. Federal Mexico agencies included CONABIO (National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity), CONANP (National Commission for Natural Protected Areas), DGVS (Mexico's Wildlife Agency, SEMARNAT), INE (National Institution of Ecology, SEMARNAT), and some state wildlife agencies.
