Prescribed Burns at Modoc NWR Benefit Wildlife
California-Nevada Offices , February 23, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Migrating waterfowl at Modoc National Wildlife Refuge, south of Alturas, CA, will soon benefit from the effects of four recently implemented prescribed burns. Firefighters from Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Complex (NWRC), assisted by firefighters from Sheldon-Hart NWRC and a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection corrections crew, put nearly 50 acres of fire into decadent vegetation in a combination of fuel types. The burns were conducted in a variety of aspen stands, riparian areas and marsh environments. With quality consumption of older, dead vegetation, areas were opened to encourage new growth and now provide an increased range of loafing and nesting habitat for migratory wildlife.
