Journal Entry   Back Service and U.S. Forest Service host Texas Red-cockaded Woodpecker Status Meeting Southwest Region, February 15, 2005 Print Friendly Version Federal, State, and Private partners involved in Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) management and recovery in Texas gathered in Lufkin, Texas, on February 15, 2005, to report accomplishments and challenges in 2004, and discuss goals and opportunities for 2005 and beyond. Representatives from the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Forest Service, Texas Committee on Natural Resources, Cook's Branch Conservancy, Temple-Inland, and the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation reported that there were 325 active RCW clusters known in Texas in 2004. This total includes 270 on Federal (Forest Service) lands, 15 on State lands, and 40 on private lands. All parties are committed to manage RCW habitat and monitor results in accordance with the January 2003 Second Revision of the RCW Recovery Plan. On Forest Service lands in 2004, approximately 75,000 acres were burned, 3,000 acres were mechanically treated, and 1,000 were thinned to improve RCW habitat conditions. Additionally, the State of Texas (Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and Texas Forest Service) reports there were 23 private landowners, 1,297,375 acres, and 31 RCW groups enrolled under the Regional Habitat Conservation Plan for the Red-cockaded Woodpecker on Private Land in the East Texas Pineywoods in 2004. On the private lands, 8,500 acres and 36 of the 40 known active RCW clusters and associated habitat are enrolled under private lands agreements with the Partners for Fish and Wildlife and/or Private Stewardship Grant program.
