KODIAK: Archaeological Site Stewardship Program Reduces Vandalism

Results are now available from the 2004 season of the Alutiiq Museum Site Stewardship Program, a partnership among the museum, local residents and the Fish and Wildlife Service. This year's efforts focused on working with volunteer site monitors, surveying the Uganik Lake and River region for previously undocumented sites and brief reconnaissance surveys in Uganik Bay and along the Sturgeon River.

In 2004, local residents and archaeologists recorded the condition of 31 sites within Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge and documented 21 additional sites through professional reconnaissance. In addition, an overview of the six-year program indicated that erosion continues to be the most serious problem facing refuge archaeological sites, and that the Stewardship program is reducing site vandalism.
