KODIAK: A new chapter in Alutiiq history -- 4,000 years later!

A 2004 archaeological survey of Red Lake and Red River in Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge was a huge success, adding information on a new chapter in Alutiiq history. Conducted as a Challenge Cost Share project between the Fish and Wildlife Service and the Alutiiq Museum, 10 new sites were discovered and 438 houses were mapped at 35 sites. Survey data will yield information on how Alutiiq people used interior river systems on Kodiak Island. Most sites surveyed date from the Kachemak era (4000 - 1000 year old).

Interesting discoveries from this year's survey include faunal preservation at two sites, documentation of a new house type for the Kodiak archipelago, and recovery of charcoal samples from a variety of structure types. Radio carbon dating will help us learn the chronology of Alutiiq architecture styles on interior rivers.
