Attwater Prairie Chicken Rearing Started at NASA
Southwest Region, December 18, 2004
Print Friendly Version
On December 18, 2004 the Clear Lake Field Office organized and coordinated the salvage of native tallgrass prairie plant species for transplant to the NASA (Johnson) Space Center for the benefit of the captive propagation program of the Attwater's prairie chicken. Forty-four volunteers, representing 8 organizations, participated in the collection of approximately 500 plants which will be used to carpet the 12 new rearing pens that the Houston Zoo is establishing on space center property. The plants came from private property made available by landowners before scheduled development. Six additional companies or organizations provided equipment and materials to assist in the effort. A national restaurant chain provided lunch for the volunteers.
