Lower Rio Grande Valley NWR Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network Site Dedication
Southwest Region, January 22, 2005
Print Friendly Version
On January 22, 2005, more than 300 guests joined staff from the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge and the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) to celebrate the dedication of the South Texas Salt Lakes International Site of Importance. The two salt lakes included in the WHSRN site designation are located at the La Sal del Rey and East Lake Tracts of the refuge. WHSRN Coordinating Office Director Charles Duncan spoke at the dedication, along with local historian David Mycue, Friends of the Wildlife Corridor Vice President Shawn Patterson, and Refuge Manager Jeff Rupert. Following the dedication, public tours of the two lakes were highlighted by sightings of long-billed curlews and sandhill cranes. Over the past several years, counts by refuge biologists and volunteers revealed that over 10% of the global population of long-billed curlews use these lakes as roosting sites during the winter season.
