Northeast Region Employees Lead Interagency Fire Training
Northeast Region, February 1, 2005
Print Friendly Version
In 2004, Gerald Vickers, fire management specialist, led the Northeast Region in fire training, serving as lead instructor for four S-215 Fire Operations in the Wildlands/Urban Interface classes for the Delaware Forest Service, West Virginia Forest Service, Missouri's Mid River Fire Academy and the New York Fire Academy. Vickers was also lead instructor for S-190 Fire Behavior in Maryland, and served as coach and simulation operator for S-420 Command and General Staff in Harrisburg, Pa.

Mike Durfee, Central Zone fire management officer, served as instructor for the M-410 Facilitative Instructor course in Wisconsin, S-215 at the Missouri academy, and was a sponsor and coordinator for the New York Wildland Fire and Incident Management Academy. In New England, Rick Vollick, fire management officer, and John Meister, prescribed fire supervisor, served as chainsaw instructors for three separate sessions. The Northeast Region's fire staff participated as lead or unit instructors for training sponsored by the National Park Service at Acadia and Cape Cod national parks, teaching Basic Firefighter and Wildfire Powersaws courses. All regional fire management officers provided annual refresher training.

Three subject matter experts from the region provided input on developing the National Wildfire Coordinating Group course. Joe Krish served on the Helibase Manager revision team, Mike Durfee serves on the S-244 Field Observer team, and Rick Vollick serves on the S-290 Intermediate Fire Behavior team. Several of our fire management officers also serve on regional, geographic, or Service-specific training or working teams.
