Friends Group Spearheads Paving of Refuge Pathway
Mountain-Prairie Region, October 15, 2004
Print Friendly Version
It's a lot easier for area seniors to enjoy the beauty of Lake Ilo NWR in west-central North Dakota, now that a portion of the existing pathway has been paved and benches added. In addition to providing access to the beautiful scenery of the 4,000-acre Refuge , the path connects an interpretive site that focuses on cultural resources and archeology with an accessible fishing pier, restroom, tables and a shelter. Paul Dinkins of the Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge Friends Group said residents of the nearby Hill Top Home of Comfort, as well as others, had a difficult time with the original gravel surface. The Group rounded up contributions from the county park board and several local organizations to help the Service pay for the paving. The concrete was dyed to provide a surface that blends in with the environment, and benches were added so trail users can rest or just spend a little more time enjoying the scenery. Managed primarily for waterfowl, the Refuge is also home to many songbirds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
